1988年。シカゴ。

カレン・バークレイ（キャサリン・ヒックス）は、女手ひとつでアンディ坊や（アレックス・ヴィンセント）を育てるシングルママ。坊やのことがかわいくてたまりません。

昨今巷では、ちびっこの間でグッド・ガイ人形が大流行。等身サイズの人形が愛嬌のある声でしゃべる様子がテレビでばんばん流れて、アンディも欲しくてたまらない。

カレンママは悩んでしまう。「坊やに買ってあげたいわ。でもおかねがないわ。どうしましょう」と思ったら、ホームレスの物売り男（ファン・ラミレス）が格安で売ってるではないか。安く買えてラッキー。坊やもハッピー。

ところが、彼女が買った人形には、通称チャッキー、またの名を『湖畔の絞殺魔（Lakeshore Strangler）』として恐れられる殺人鬼、チャールズ・リー・レイ（ブラッド・ドゥーリフ。チャッキーの声も彼）の邪悪な魂が乗り移っていたのである。昨夜の深夜早朝、こんな事件があった↓

殺人鬼レイはマイク刑事（クリス・サランドン）に追われ、オモチャ屋に逃げ込んだ。ブードゥー呪術の使い手であるレイは、ドタンバ間一髪でおまじないを唱えた。するとどうであろう。夜空におそろしい雷鳴が轟き、この世の終わりかと思いきや、巨大な稲妻がオモチャ屋を直撃。ぴかぴかどかん。

レイの肉体は滅びたが、彼の魂はグッド・ガイ人形にビョーンと乗り移った。その人形が巡り巡ってアンディ坊やの元にやってきたのである。

人形になったチャッキーは、カタコト動き回って、ホイホイ殺人をする。これが邪悪な人形であると知ったアンディ坊やは「チャッキーがやった！」と訴えるが、信じてもらえず、キチガイ病院に連れていかれてしまう。

チャッキーがおそろしいといっても、たかが小さな人形である。こんなチビがホイホイと殺人を実行できるのは、そのやり方が巧妙で陰湿だから。動く人形に誰かが気づいて「チャッキーがやった！」と訴えると、チャッキーは普通の人形に戻って、しれーとだんまりする。訴えた人間はキチガイ扱いされてしまう。なんて憎たらしい人形！

こんなひとたちが登場します↓

マギー（ダイナ・マノフ）... デパートで働くカレンさんの同僚であり親友ネーチャン。カレン母息子のことを心配して、世話を焼いてくれます。

エディ・カプート（ニール・ジュントーリ）... チャッキーが人間だった頃の悪い仲間。レイをほったらかして、ひとりで逃げちゃったもんで、チャッキーに命を狙われる。

ジャック（トミー・スワードロー）... 刑事マイクの同僚もチャッキーに襲われ、びっくり仰天。

Dr. Death（レイモンド・オリヴァー）... 人間だった頃のチャッキー、殺人鬼レイにブードゥー呪術を教えた黒人男。「チャッキーが人間に戻る方法」を明かす。

アードモア博士（ジャック・コーヴィン）... アンディ坊やをキチガイ認定したバカ医者。

クリズウェル（アラン・ワイルダー）... カレンが働くデパートのいぢわる上司。
