近未来。

セレブなスターと、彼らに憧れるファンの関係は、ものすごいレベルに達しています。

セレブが病気に罹ると、ファンは専門クリニックにいって、セレブの肉体から採取されたウィルスを注射してもらって、グヘヘと喜ぶ。彼らはウィルスを通じて憧れの対象と同化し、苦しみを共有することにより、満足を得るのである。なんという変態ファンであるか。と呆れてしまうが、まるでプチ整形をやるような調子で、コアなファンはこの行為に熱中している。

ルーカス・クリニックは業界1位の人気クリニック。同社を経営するドリアン・ルーカス（ニコラス・キャンベル）は人気セレブたちと独占契約することにより、他では手に入らないウィルスを提供している。『The Lucas Clinic for the true connoisseur』という広告文句は伊達ではない。

中でも一番の人気はハンナ・ガイスト（サラ・ガドン）なる美女セレブ。彼女の肉体から採取されたウィルスとなれば、インフルエンザだろうが、ヘルペスだろうが、ただの風邪だろうが、飛ぶように売れる。

映画の主人公、シド・マーチ（ケイレブ・ランドリー・ジョーンズ）は、ここで働く技術者であり、有能な販売員でもある。彼が顧客と接する様子を見ていると、医療のプロというより、高級レストランのワインコンシェルジュみたい。

クリニックを訪れる客は誰もが期待と不安でいっぱい。シドはファンが聞きたがっている台詞を夢心地に囁く。セレブの優雅さを説くさまは、「じつはぼくもファンなのですよ」と告白しているよう。シドは客の理解者であり、家来であり、指導者にもなれる。そうして緊張をほぐしてやると同時に、自尊心をくすぐる。頃合いを見計らい、あくまで控えめに、「一級品を求めるお客様にはこちらがおすすめ」と箱を開く。その瞬間、ウィルスは宝石と化す。客は目を丸くし、大急ぎでクレジットカードを差し出す。神業セールストーク。

シドはこの仕事に身も心も捧げているようだが、技術者人種の常として、仕事には敬意を払っていても、雇用者に対する忠誠心はゼロだったという点が、じきに明かされる。

というのは、彼はルールを破り、ウィルスを社外に持ち出し、アングラ市場に流しているのだ。ここで、この映画独自のおもしろい設定が登場する。クリニックが売るウィルスには『ReadyFace』と呼ばれる独自のコピープロテクションが施されているのである。Adobeかマイクロソフトみたい。以下、ドリアン社長が語った説明の要約↓

「人間の顔は膨大な情報の集積です。小さな筋肉の動きが、途方なく複雑であいまいな非言語情報を瞬時に伝達する。こんなやりとりを私たちは無意識のうちに行っている。『ReadyFace』はオペレーターの脳に分け入り、その精神状態から顔画像をつくると同時に、ウィルスを分析し、顔画像に反映させる。つまり、顔画像はウィルス構造の情報を記録する媒体となる。オペレーターが顔画像を修正すると、ウィルスの構造も変わる。そのさい、ウィルスの伝染性を除去する。このコピープロテクション機能により、当クリニックは商品の流通を制御でき、顧客の優位性は守られます」

という話で、つまり、この顔画像てのは、バーコードみたいなもんなんですね。それならバーコートでいいじゃないかと思うかもしれないが、こんなギミックがあったほうが映画的におもしろいのである。

こんなコピー防止の仕組みに加え、クリニックの技術者たちは厳重なボディチェックを受けるので、ウィルスを社外に持ち出すのは困難だが、シドは自分の肉体に注射してチェックをすり抜け、さらに、自宅に『ReadyFace』を持ってて、それを使えば、コピーオッケーの海賊版がつくれちゃう。『ReadyFace』を自宅に持つのは重大な背任行為だが、彼はこっそりやり続けている。

海賊版ウィルスの買い手は町の肉屋である。この世界では、セレブの細胞からつくったブヨブヨのステーキ肉が売られている。肉屋のキッチンはバイオエンジニアリングの実験場のようなありさま。セレブ肉はそこらへんに出回ってて、レストランで食べることもできる。ウィルス移植よりもお手軽な娯楽として提供されている。肉屋のオヤジはアングラ世界とつながってて、シドみたいなルートをたくさん持っている。

ある日、シドは自分の同僚が逮捕されてびっくりする。デレク（Reid Morgan）という男はシドと同じような横流しをやってて、それがバレちゃったらしい。これはヤバいとヒヤヒヤするが、社長はシドをまったく疑っておらず、彼をデレクの後任に指名。シドは「ハンナ・ガイストの血液を採取してこい」というだいじな仕事を任される。

ハンナ・ガイストは前述したようにルーカス・クリニックのドル箱タレント。彼女と独占契約することで得られる利益だけで、業界2位のクリニックの全売り上げを上回る。だから、これは重要な任務である。

シドはハンナに面会する。映画の中で徐々に明かされるんだが、シドはこの女性に憧憬の念を抱いており、それは通常の意味での『愛』とは少しちがうようだが、彼にとっては愛なのだろう。彼女の寝室に通されると静々と近寄り、イエス様にかしずくような調子で血液を採取するんだが、彼はその血液をこっそり自分に注射する。

その後、いつものように、自宅の『ReadyFace』でウィルスを抽出しようと試みたら、なぜか機械が壊れてしまう。なすすべなく途方にくれていたらば、ハンナ・ガイスト急死のニュースが報じられる。テレビは連日大騒ぎ。国葬並の葬儀が行われ、ファンは号泣。シドはウィルスのせいでゲホゲホと具合が悪くなり、杖をついて歩くようになってしまう。

彼は死から逃れるため、アングラ肉屋のオヤジのところにいく。オヤジに頼んで『ReadyFace』の壊れた部品を調達しようとしたらば、レヴィン（ジェイムズ・ケイド）なる別のアングラ男を紹介され、そいつが助けてくれるかと思ったら、またまたヒデー目に遭う。

ハンナ・ガイストのお抱え医師（マルコム・マクダウェル）だの、ルーカス・クリニックのライバル企業の女社長（ウェンディ・クルーソン）だの、いろんなひとたちが出てきて、シドはみんなの思惑でひっかき回され、血ヘドを吐きながら、生死の境をさまよい、そして、最後には、企業が仕掛けた陰謀を暴き、シドという男はただものではなかったという点を証明し、ハンナ・ガイストへの愛を完結させるのである。

感想

あー、びっくりした。

好きなタレントの使用済みナプキンを欲しがったりするような変態さんには、この映画の設定は「おれの時代がきたか！」と喜ばしいのだろうが、一般人には理解しがたい心理であります。骨まで愛する。あなたのゲロさえ愛おしい。と言うけれども、それは例えですから。よりによってウィルスをもらって喜ぶなんて、いったいなにを考えているんでしょうか。

白を基調としたこじゃれた美術セットはこむずかしい映画のようだし、ヘロヘロになったシドさんが血を吐きながらへんな幻影を見ていたりするので、「不条理系のアレですか？」と不安を持ちつつ見続けていったところ、意外や意外、芯のあるプロットはサスペンス映画として成立している。医療企業の争いはおもしろいし、伏線も上手に張られている。エンディングがきちっとまとまっている。映画を観終わると、次のひとことが頭に浮かぶ↓

「これって愛なの？」

この映画はラブストーリーだったんですね。おー、なかなかやるではないか。デビュー作でこれはすごい。

難解だなと思える部分はあるが、全体の骨組みが重力を持ち、構築されているから、「もういちど観たらわかるかな」と何度も観たくなる。「セレブのウィルスをもらって喜ぶファン」という設定がただの驚かせに終わっておらず、緻密な描き込みがなされているからえらいです。

また、この映画にはインターネットが出てこない。一般人がセレブを知る手がかりは、テレビと雑誌だけ。Facebookもtwitterもウェブサイトもない。だから、近未来の設定ながら、昔っぽいかんじもする。

その昔、ネットがなかった頃、スターというのはきらびやかであると同時に、どこか悲劇的な孤独さが感じられたように思う。そこがいかにもスターらしい。私の世代だと、80年代のマドンナやマイケル・ジャクソンがそんなかんじだった。もっと古いマリリン・モンローなどは代表選手なんだろうが、私は世代が違うのでリアルタイムには知らない。いまのスターはtwitterだのなんだのでしゃしゃり出てくるので、そういう悲壮さはあまり感じられないですね。

この映画を観ていたら、そんな昔のスター像が思い出され、そのように考えると、まっしろけの美術セットは昔のSF映画によくあったなあという気もして、『分岐した過去』で起きている出来事のようにも見える。そこらへんもよかったなあ。

一般的な話、私は「〇〇の息子がつくった！」という宣伝文句には興味を惹かれない。いや、興味を覚えるのは事実だが、「それがどうした？」っていう気もするからさ。しかし、これは父と同じbody-horrorのジャンルであるから、意識するなという方が無理である。どうしても昔の名作を思い出す。

似ているかんじがあるなあと思ったが、これは先入観なのかもしれない。どっちにせよ、これはデビュー作なので、そういう風に見てしまうのは仕方がないことなのだろう。でも、この先の作品に触れていけば、余計な詮索は払拭されていくだろう。

私の場合、近年のクローネンバーグには興味をなくしちゃったので、これからは息子さんに楽しませてもらえるってのはありがたいことです。よかったよかった。

コメンタリは、主に、ライティングだのエフェクトだの撮影の小話だのがほとんどだった。技術的な話に興味があるひとにはいいと思うが、私は脚本についてもっとしゃべってほしかったので少し残念だったです。

それにしても、クローネンバーグの息子というのはいったいどんなきもちなんですかね。メイキングのインタビューでは「みんなはこの映画を観て、ぼくのことを天才だって思ってくれたらいいなあテヘヘ」なんつって照れ笑いをしているくらいなので（傲慢な印象はないですよ。テヘヘですから。楽しいアンちゃんです）、さすがに肝っ玉が据わってやがるなとおもいました。

interviewer: Surely it's naive to imagine that your clients think the same way.
Mr. Lucas: Really? Naive? My clients are intelligent adults from all walks of life, all ages, and they find meaning in all the stories around them. They choose to come to me because they wanna feel more connected to those faces, to those people that they see in the magazines and on television, and their lives are much richer for it.

Mr. Lucas: The human face is a powerfull messenger. Our brains are tuned to its every nuance. The smallest shift in its musculature can translate itself into complex nonverbal information so subtle and communicated so quickly that we often don't even register it, not consciously. One could say that for human beings, the face is a structure with a high-information resolution. The ReadyFace console is designed to engage the user's unconscious mental resources by exploiting the brain's sensitivity to facial patterns. Our technician loads a virus sample into the port, where it's analised by ReadyFace and is translated into face graphic. This image represents the structure of the disease. It is in a sense the face of the virus, dense with information. As Mr March manipulates the graphic, the machine manipulates the virus in the sample container, eventually rendering it noncontagious. This advanced form of copy protection affords us control over the distribution of our products, as the virus cannot spread beyond the infected client. Arvid: Well, these are just muscle cells. It all depends on whether the human being is found in its materials. Right now the law tends towards something more religious, but we'll see what happens when we go from growing celebrity cell steaks to growing complete celebrity bodies. I'm looking forward to it. And with the proper funding, I could probably make that happen.

Dr. Abendroth: You share a death with her, and that's a powerful bond.

Dr. Abendroth: I passed on your finding to an old colleague of mine, Agna Hahn. She's a professor of biotechnological law in California. Now, she discovered that Vole & Tesser had recently patented a genetically modified virus. It's quite likely the source of Hannah's and your infection.
Syd: A patent?
Dr. Abendroth: Mm. What it means, it's unclear to me. But if they intended to kill her, then why would they declare ownership over the weapon?

Levine: I think sexual politics are invloved also because of cell penetration by the virus. The original host takes on the role of the male and the newly infected is the female. And then the infected changes gender to infect others, sort of the way the reef fish change gender. It probably says something about your customers.

Syd: I'd like to tell you something about your virus.
Mira Tesser: Oh? And what would that be?
Syd: The contact Hannah Geist signed with Lucas prevents you from selling her diserses, but a virus you built and patented yourself would remain your property even if it passed through her body. You could infect her, recover the sample and then sell it as a Vole & Tesser exclusive.
Mira Tesser: Is that true?
Syd: It's why you commissioned the virus from Derek Lessing and why he infected her during a house call.
Mira Tesser: It's a great loophole, isn't it? My idea, of course. We stood to make a lot of money. Unfortunately there was a problem with your friend Derek's build.
Syd: I wanna know if it can be cured.
Mira Tesser: I think so. However, producing a cure would be costly, and as you acquire the virus on your own, we feel no responsibility for your condition.
Syd: I have somoething to barter.

Syd: We... have a chance to innovate, and to do it in a way that will benefit you both. The technology already exists... and I know where to find it. Allow me to take a moment of your time.

Mira Tesser: From the perspective of the virus, the human being is irrelevant. What matters is the system that allows it to function. Skin cells, nerve cells, the right home for the right disease.
