ジェイミー（ジム・スタージェス）は写真家である。彼の兄も写真家だし、10年前に死んだパパも写真家だった。家族じゅうが写真家である。ジェイミーはアナログ一眼レフ + 暗室で現像という昔風スタイルだが、兄の方はデジカメ + Photoshopという調子で、兄弟はスタイルという点において大きな隔たりがあるのだが、ふたりはスタジオを共有していて仲がいいです。

さて、ジェイミーの顔には、大きなハート型の痣（あざ）がある。体にも痣がある。そのせいで彼は引っ込み思案で無口なんだが、その心根は優しい青年である。写真の作品を通じて自己表現をしようとがんばっているというかんじ。兄は結婚していて息子がいるが（ジェイミーからみれば甥）、ジェイミーは独身で、ガールフレンドはおらず、優しいママと同居している。ママはジェイミーの将来を心配しつつ、いつも優しい。兄も優しい。甥も優しい。愛すべきファミリーのみなさんです（甥だけは少し問題があるのだが）。

ある日、ジェイミーは町のギャングがヒデーことをやってるのを目撃する。そこらへんの人を捕まえて、火をつけてリンチをしているのだ。ジェイミーはこわくて遠くからシャッターを切るのが精一杯だったが、運悪くそこでフィルムがおしまいとなり、シャーと巻き戻しが始まり、その音からギャングに気づかれてしまう。ヤベーと思ったら、なんとそのチンピラは人間ではなかった。近づいてきた黒フードの男の顔が見えたら、なんといえばいいのか、巨大な口にギザギザ歯がずらーと並ぶ、醜悪な悪魔顔であった。うげえええ。ジェイミーはアワを食って逃げた。

死体が発見され、ニュースになった。テレビに目撃者のインタビューが出てきて「悪魔の仮面をつけたギャングたちだった」というんだが、ジェイミーはちがうと思う。あれは仮面などではない。本当に悪魔なんだと彼は思うのである。

本物の悪魔かどうかはさておき、このギャングはその後も犯行を重ね、近隣住民は恐怖する。テレビニュースはそればかり。やがて容疑者が特定されたといって、いかにもわるもん顔の男の顔がテレビにでかでかと出る。この男は顔にタトゥーがあって、片手に武器を装着しているそうな。

ところで、ジェイミーは前述した通りの引っ込み思案の性格なんだが、隣に越してきた陽気な独身男（ノエル・クラーク）と仲良くなる。この男はなぜかジェイミーを気に入り「痣なんか気にするなヨ」と優しいことをいって、バーに連れていってくれたりする。ジェイミーは友達ができてうれしいなと思ってたところで、悲劇が起きる。ジェイミーは悲しみのひとになる。

と思ったら、こんどはとてつもなくすばらしい出来事が起きる。カワイコちゃん（クレマンス・ポエジー）が登場。ジェイミーは恋愛ってもんを初体験して大幸福になる。人生ってすばらしいいいいいいい！が、またまた悲劇が起きる。彼は大後悔をするんだが、もう後戻りはできない。絶望の台詞↓

文藝的な映像美。練られた脚本。底力のある演技。おもしろいtwist。これはみんなにおすすめしたいホラー映画ですよ。ホラー好きなひとにも、そうじゃないひとにも。

感想

フィリップ・リドリーの15年ぶりの監督作品（前作は『聖なる狂気 / The Passion of Darkly Noon (1995)』）ということで興味深く見ましたが、これはよかったですよ。中盤あたりで「これってよくある系のアレ？」と落胆しかけたんだけど、その後の展開はひと味違うぶぶんがあってかなり楽しめました。

監督さんが小説家というだけのことはあり、台詞がいいです。おっ、メモメモ。てかんじの名台詞がたくさんありました。下のMemorable Quotesのところに書き出してみたので、どうぞご覧ください。

さて、ジェイミーは悪魔そのものを目撃したんだけど、他の目撃者たちは「悪魔の仮面をつけたギャングだった」と主張するというところで、映画を観る私らはこのように想像するのではないでしょうか。あんなこわい連中を間近で目撃したら、錯覚を起こして、悪魔そのものに見えてしまうということもあるんじゃないかと。人間の脳が引き起こす摩訶不思議な変換機能ってあるかもなあということでいったんは納得するんだけど、テレビのインタビューで出てくるちょっとした台詞に「ん？」とひっかかるのです。

目撃者のオッサンが「仮面だった」と主張すると、その隣にオッサンの子供がいて、「ちがうヨ！ほんとに悪魔だった！」と声を張り上げるのです。それは一瞬のシーンなんだけど、そこがあるゆえに、映画を観てる私らとしては落ち着かなくなります。

も、もしかして、ほんとうに悪魔なのかなあ。子供とか、一部の大人だけに見える超自然的なもの、つまり悪魔なのかなあという風に考えこんでしまうのです。あの子供のシーンはすごく効果的です。こういうの、うまいなあと思いました。また、このインタビューのシーンはそれだけでなく、あとから重要な意味を持つという点も巧みです。

「こむづかしい映画はごめんです」と思う方がいるかもしれませんが、難解な映画ではありません。ちゃんと観てればなめらかに物語がわかるし、最後の「あー、そうだったのかあ」というオチは新鮮だし、それに続くエンディングがこれまたいいです。こわくて、泣けます。いや、ほんとに。

この映画を観てから町をぶらぶら歩いていたらば、そこらへんにいる普通のみなさんを見ると、こいつらは平凡で幸福そうな顔つきで歩いているが、もしかして、じつはとんでもない悪魔的な所業をひそかにやっているのではないか。人間の裏側って計り知れない悪意と嘘に満ちているのではないか。なんて考えてしまうようになりましたよ。

私、この映画のネタバレを書こうと思ってジタバタしたのですが、どうもうまく書けないので断念します。簡単にまとめてしまうとおもしろさが伝わらないように思えるし、長文にするとそんなものだれが読むかという風になってしまう。がんばったんだけど、うまくできないんですよ。

細かい台詞の妙がこの映画のいいところだと思うんで、興味を持った方はぜひご覧になってください。ラスト近くの台詞の中で、あの方が "old son" というところ。あれを聞いたとき、私、背筋がひんやりしましたね。

Dad: You need real dark to see stars. Because in the city there's too many street lamps and stuff, see, so... But when things are really dark, as dark as they can get, you see so much more, so many wonderful things. Sometimes, old son... things are gonna get darker for you than they do for the rest of us. But you've got to see those moments as something special. Because they're showing you things. A way of looking at the world that no one else will ever, ever understand. That's a blessing, Jamie. That's not a curse. Does that make sense?
Jamie: I love you, Dad.
Dad: I love you, Jamie. I'll always love you. It'll never go. Come on, old son, let's get you home. Your mum will be waiting for us.
